I asked her the same questions that I asked Christopher Milone, check out his answers in the last post here. 


 1.What is your advice to someone starting out as an MUA on how to build a solid kit?

If you are just starting out as a makeup artist, I suggest you buy a starter kit from your makeup school or favorite brand. They usually deeply discount the kit and it contains the basic necessities for doing a makeup. I also think you should work in retail for a beauty supply or counter. Not only do you get familiar with a variety of products but you get gratis from several lines. You really get to figure out what you like and don’t like.

 2. The 1-3 things everyone should have in your kit.

Every makeup artist should have a range of foundations to match every skin color and quality makeup brushes.

In my kit I’ve been using a lot of the Viseart palettes for eyeshadow, concealer and lip color. I also love the Youngblood powders and highlighters. There is a new Illuminating palette that’s coming out this summer I am really excited about. The Cinema Secret foundation palettes are great for offering a wide range of colors, offer beautiful coverage and travel nicely.

 

3. What you wish you had known when you started building your kit?
I wish I didn’t waste so much money on cheap makeup. Yes, you can make it work, but you have to work harder to blend it and keep it on.  I would rather just spend the money on quality products and not have to fight the makeup as the shoot goes on.

Professional Makeup Artist Kit Building Tips. How to do more with less!

The question I get most often, after people subscribe to the email list and get the list of kit basics is what specific brands and shades of products that I recommend. The answer is always to first evaluate who your Ideal Client is (you should really dig deep into this guide!)

Since I get this question so often, I decided to dig a bit deeper into what is in my actual working artist kit. The work that I do is mostly in commercial production, portraits and special events, so my kit is built for the type of client that I work with.

In this video, I talk a little about the 2 main foundations that I use (Graftobian and Temptu S/B airbrush) and why they work for me.

No matter where you are and what type of clients you are serving, I recommend choosing products that will take up minimal space in your kit. Palettes are great space savers.

A professional artist is prepared for all complexion colors and skin types!

In this video, I talk about choosing foundations that you can build up the level of coverage or mix moisturizer to sheer out as needed. Be prepared to manipulate your products to customize the shade and coverage that is ideal for your client.

13 things you need to add to your Pro-Mua Kit today

Over the years my kit has grown and expanded with my career. I have gone from the tiniest little tackle box to a loaded down SUV full of everything I can think of that I may need!

Yep, that is the actual little tiny Caboodle (but a knock off!) that I used to keep my treasures in when I first started many, many moons ago! I keep in the closet, (empty and apparently very dirty!) to remind myself of how far I’ve come. And maybe just in case I ever need it

In the event that a client needs anything, especially anything personal (hello tampons!) they are going straight to the makeup artist/stylist. You want to be the one who saves the day! That is kind how my kit grew and grew. Anytime someone would ask me for something, if I didn’t have it that day, I would make sure to have it the next time.

I work in a market where I do hair, makeup and wardrobe styling so that is one reason why I have so much stuff. Another reason I can afford to bring so much with me is because I am driving my kit around in my big mama SUV. Regardless of where you are in your career or how you travel with your kit, you will want to make sure you have some of these “in case of emergency” items.

Yes, we are talking about a makeup kit and what I am about to tell you has nothing to do with makeup BUT when someone on set or at a wedding needs one of these things, the makeup artist is the first person they ask. If you don’t have it, they won’t hate you forever and never hire you but if you DO have it, you will basically be a super hero who saved the day from impending doom.

Sounds dramatic but its just so true. Production or special events can be a full on soap opera at times. I like to avoid the drama and turn frowns upside down whenever possible. Here are some things I carry with me that have wowed my clients.

  • Snacks- For you or your client in a low blood sugar situation.
  • Tampons
  • Drinking Straws- To keep your lipstick in check!
  • Lint Roller
  • Sewing Kit- Get one with prethreaded needles, scissors, safety pins, seam ripper
  • Manicure Kit
  • Eyeglass Repair Kit
  • Baby Wipes
  • Breath mints/Wisps/Mouthwash- Keep everyone’s breath minty fresh!
  • Nail Polish Remover
  • Bug Spray
  • First Aid Kit- You never know when you need a bandaid or OTC pain reliever.
  • Umbrella

These are not expensive items, but they are priceless when you need them. That umbrella is clutch when the bottom falls out of the sky and that gorgeous client you’ve been working so hard on has to step out into the rain. Or when you are on an outdoor set working in film and tv, that umbrella may be the only spot of shade you can find for hours! If its summertime and you are in the south, you will want to make sure to have bug spray and sunscreen.

I have been hard at work over here getting organized for the big rebrand. I can’t tell you how excited/nervous/anxious I am to share everything I have been working on.

Why am I excited?

Because I think you are going to be excited about all of the resources that I am putting together for you.

Why am nervous?

Well, this is a big, big, big investment. I am investing a ton of time (all day, every day) and a small fortune to blend my work as a freelancer (check me out here) with these resources to help you do the same thing!

Ya’ll when I say a small fortune, I mean it! I have a few thousand out to a designer who is working on the visual flow of the new branding and website, a few thousand to an attorney that is filing a trademark for the new business name (that is why I haven’t shared it yet!) and hundreds of dollars to have my kids in daycare so I can focus on getting this off the ground this year.

Preach! Right? Who wants to be throwing their hands up and celebrating their wins this year? I know I do!

Hey ya’ll its mid February and I know some of you have already kind of given up on those resolutions. I don’t even make them anymore, well I never really did because I know I am never serious about them.

What am I serious about? Goals!

Who wants to take a refreshed (my word for 2016!) start and get cracking on what you want to make happen this year?

I am excited for you and I am here to help you make it happen. Yesterday I sent out an email to the list (are you on it? get updates here!)  to see who wanted to jump on a call with me to chat for 30 minutes. I only had 3 spots and they ALL got filled in less than 45 minutes.

Seeing you guys take action on your goals gets me all kinds of jazzed. I am so excited to chat with these girls!

But then I got sad because my inbox was flooded with folks who wanted one of the 3 spots but didn’t get there fast enough. When I woke up this morning, I wanted to do something for everyone.

I challenge you to be S.M.A.R.T.

This may be old news. I certainly am not claiming to have made it up. But setting your goals in a S.M.A.R.T. mindset will pretty much guarantee your success. I challenge you to download this worksheet here for free and put pen to paper.

There is something about getting your messy thoughts out of your brain, using your hand to put them on paper makes them magically come to life. Writing them down makes them real. And real is more attainable.

If you have never heard of the S.M.A.R.T. system, let me break it down for you so you can get cracking.

Last year I did something I NEVER thought I could or would do. I ran my first half marathon! I signed up and started training when my daughter was 4 months old and ran this race when she was 8 months old. I never thought I would do this (and wouldn’t have done it without help and motivation from my friends!). If you have something big you want to do, use the S.M.A.R.T. system to get you to the finish line.SubstandardFullSizeRender-2

S.= Specific

Specific. Get really, really specific about your goal. It should also stretch you a little outside of your comfort zone. What is fun about doing something super easy? Challenge yourself!

What do I mean? Instead of saying, I want to lose some weight this year and get in shape….Try saying I want to complete a half marathon this year. Take it even further, pick a race and sign up. Registering for races isn’t cheap and find that when I put money on the line for anything I am more likely to stick it out.

I sometimes still can't believe that was me!

M.= Measureable

Measureable. You have to be able to measure it so you know that it is complete. It should also be meaningful and motivational to you. Why do you want to do this? For me, running this race was something I wanted to do for myself and also to show my daughter that you can do anything! I was totally emotional on race day and getting to kiss her sweet face at the finish line motivated me to keep on trucking.

What does that mean? Once you get specific, you can know how to measure it. If you want to finish a half marathon, you will know it is complete when you cross that finish line. Just signing up or picking up your race day packet is not completing the goal! You have to cross the finish line and get your medal!

A. = Achievable

Achievable or attainable. Now I am the first person to cheer you on and say you can do anything girlfriend! But if I am going to get real with myself, and I have to do that from time to time, even though I am a pretty good swimmer, I probably couldn’t/shouldn’t try to go out and swim across the Atlantic Ocean like Jennifer Figge did in 2009. If you want some serious inspo, check out this story about her solo trans-Atlantic swim here. 

What is achievable for you? If you are in your first year of booking weddings as a makeup artist, maybe you want to book 10-15 weddings this year. Maybe you do more and next year your goal is 20+.  You want to be able to achieve this goal but (back to the S) have it stretch you just enough so that you feel challenged. It won’t feel as good if you make it too easy on yourself!

R. = Reason/Result

This is your WHY! When I signed up, trained for and completed the half marathon last year my daughter was my WHY. She was born in March 2015 and ya’ll she is an amazing and straight up magical creature. A true star and independent woman from the first day of her life, I can tell that she was given to me to keep me on my toes.

Why was she my why? Well, I wanted to do it for myself. It was a good way for me to stay on track to losing the baby weight and physical activity keeps me sane. I was able to do some of my training runs with her in the stroller and I did my longer runs every week with my team so that gave me some much needed alone time.

I feel like doing this made me a better mom. It forced me to take care of myself (moms are the worst at making themselves a priority!) which made me better able to take care of my family. Most of all, I wanted her to see that she could do anything. Especially with a great support system and plan in place.

This sweet face is totally what kept me going! She is my why!

T. = Timely

In order to be successful, you need to give yourself the time to make it happen. But not too much time or it will never happen! You probably can’t wake up tomorrow and build your own website in an hour, if you have no experience. But if you gave yourself 3 years to get your website up and running, you would probably drag your feet and no get much done because it doesn’t feel urgent.

Set that deadline! And make an appointment in your calendar to make your action steps a priority. Our group (#prettytoughmothers on Instagram) trained for this race over the course of 3 months. For two of us, we had never run more than 2 miles without stopping, so the fact we were able to work our way up to 12 nonstop miles in 12 weeks together was impressive. Every Saturday or Sunday, we met up in our neighborhood and did a little more each week  than had done the week before.

We stayed together and when one of us wanted to quit, we encouraged the other to keep going. Between the three of us, we had 7 smalls kids from 8 months to 6 years old! There were days that we did these long runs on no sleep and after a long week of being everything to everyone in our houses. And don’t even get me started on having to get up an hour early to pump or nurse before we ran. Running 10 miles when you are breastfeeding is a special kind of challenge for sure!

Can you tell how much I am struggling here? This is around the 10th mile and I had gotten separated from my teammate for a little while. I was struggling! Not going to lie, I shed a few tears and totally thought about quitting (but my phone was dead so I couldn’t call anyone to come pick me up!) but I connected to my WHY and caught back up to her. I was so thankful for my team and all they had done to encourage each other and keep us all going!

That brings me to another important part of setting big goals. Finding your support system. Some people call it your tribe/squad/crew/clique/mastermind, but whatever it is, you have to know you has your back. I knew throughout that entire training process that we would always be there for each other and that kept me going.

Grow Your Business in the Slow Season

It doesn’t matter if you are working as a full time makeup artist or if you are doing a little freelance on the side, OR if you are primarily in bridal or strictly commercial work, this time of year can be a little quiet. And for creatives, sometimes we get stir crazy!

So what do you with the down time? My suggestion is that you use this time to GROW your business and take it to the next level!

Here are a few things that I am working on now to grow my business.

Work on New Portfolio Images

This time of year is booming with workshops and styled shoots. This is an excellent time to   get together a team and add some fresh work to your portfolio. These are the best types of images because you can control the content. Unlike with paid clients, you can choose the model, the wardrobe, exactly how you want hair/makeup, the photographer and location.

 Make Friends. Influence People.

It’s easy to hibernate in the winter. I get it, you just want to snuggle up and wait for spring time. But it’s so, so, so important to get show your face…like in real life, not on social media only! If you are new to life as a creative entrepreneur, make sure to get out and connect face to face with other creates.

How? Check out the Rising Tide Society and find a group that meets nearby. I think there are 4-5 groups that meet up the first Tuesday of the month in Richmond, VA. If you don’t know about the Rising Tide Society, look it up, join the movement. #creativityovercompetition

Brainstorm New Services

If you have a busy season and a slower season, you should brainstorm ways to keep the money rolling in year around. At last months Rising Tide Society meeting, my dear friend, Joanna Avant (amazing wardrobe consultant) and I snapped the above picture at the meet up. Educate Yourself

Sometimes I can be a big old nerd. I just love to learn new stuff. I don’t know why, but knowing new stuff is fun to me! Another super cool thing about the Rising Tide Society in addition to the community aspect is their focus on education.

Their blog is a wealth of information on SO many topics that creative entrepreneurs struggle with. For the last few weeks, I have been signing up for their weekly webinars that have had incredibly informative speakers sharing valuable information that we all need. Check it out!

Refresh

I have mentioned this a couple of times, and it is mostly because I want to make sure that you guys are ready for this……2016 is the year of Refresh for me.

What does that mean? Coming soon, I will be rebranding and fusing together Emily Hudspeth + MMMUA to live under a new brand that is going to be awesome! I have been hard at work with a super talented designer to create a beautiful home for all of this info to live. There will be new resources and guides and I can’t wait to show it to you later this Spring.

One thing at a Time

Today was the first day both of my kids went to daycare. I feel like I am starting a whole new chapter, a whole new book really! 

Not just because its the new year but because I feel like we are in an entirely new season here. Both in my family life and for my businesses. While it is overwhelming at times, is truly exciting.

A complete rebrand of both MMMUA and my blog as an artist, Emily Hudspeth. I am working with some amazingly talented, genius folks on this and I can not wait to share. Im not ready to let out all the good news just yet but I wanted to give you a little bit of a heads up so aren’t totally shocked when you see the name change as these two blogs merge.

Well, its more of a blend than a merge.

One of the the things I am most excited about is sharing the BTS process with you guys. I think it will really give you some great ideas and inspiration to watch me give my brand a facelift this year. 2016 is a PIVOT POINT for my brand.

It can be easy to get stuck in a rut and keep doing things the same old way when you have been doing this for as long as I have! Over the years, I have been pretty good about evolving as an artist, especially as my skills sharpened or location changed. The last few years I haven’t made any radical changes to my business since I was mostly focused on having my babies. Today they both started daycare a few days a week so I am really excited to have time to pour life back in to the business.

5 Tips to Clear Clutter and Create Space for a Prosperous 2016

From my sweet little family to yours. Allow me to re-introduce myself, I am Emily Hudspeth Greenwald, a full time mama and full time freelance artist. As we close out this wild year, I am doing some things to prep for a wildly successful 2016 and I wanted to share with you what I have planned and have you be part of this journey.

GreenwaldFamilyPortraitsRVA--2I know it is a completely cliche thing to say but I can’t even believe how 2015 flew by. It was truly a blur! Maybe because I started the year by welcoming my new daughter into our home and spent the other 2/3 of the year adjusting to having 2 kids under 2 years old while trying to also keep my business and household in order.

My most sincere apologies for being absent from posting new content for you. I started this website just as I was getting pregnant with my son in 2012. I think I had this unrealistic goal of being able to create this amazing resource for you and keep it going while also trying to grow my family.

Turns out that this season of my life, which is totally amazing and truly the hardest thing I have ever done, hasn’t allowed me to be 100% here, and to be at work as a freelance artist myself and to be present for my family. Since family comes first and my freelance work comes next, there haven’t been enough hours to push this where I want it to go.

Running on little sleep, I’ve had 10,000 ideas with so much good intention but no energy to get it done. After going to the Makeup Show in New York (with my 9 week old baby, I can’t even believe I did that!), I really decided to just slow down and give myself some space to think about how I could do the best work in all of these areas.

Now that I have given myself that time to really sort thru what is important, I am excited to make big things happen in 2016. I want to share 5 tips that have really helped me and a free download to help kickstart your goal setting.

Before I could get started, I needed to clean up the clutter. My mind seriously feels so scattered with a million ideas of things I want to do and jumbled together with the things that I have to do. Its a mess around here!  I have started cleaning out stuff, purging my closet, organizing my makeup (personally and in my kit), organizing closets and tossing things that were stuffed in drawers. I can’t tell you how amazing that feels!

FullSizeRender-7For awhile now I had been seeing this book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, popping up everywhere. It seemed like everyone was talking about it! So I downloaded it and have been listening to it for the past 2 weeks and its really got me fired up to clean even more!

Seriously, it is so good. Its got me thinking of other ways to purge things that are cluttered and holding me back, not just around the house. Moving all the clutter out of my way has me totally energized and ready to take on 2016 in a big way. Here are some things I’ve been cleaning out. More than just the overflowing sock and underwear drawer!

  • Email  I have had a notification in my gmail for weeks saying I needed to free up some space in my email. Because I have my hands so full right now, I ignored it until a few days ago when it said I was officially out of space and would no longer get my email. Uh oh! That prompted me to start deleting old stuff. Friends, I had emails for 2006! There were some serious flashbacks in there that I did not need reminders of!
  • Unroll/Unsubscribe  There is a fun little tool called unroll.me that is super helpful with email overload. I know you haven’t been getting many emails from me lately but if you are on my list or any other list and the emails are no longer useful to you please unsubscribe!  There is no need to keep deleting them over and over again and never opening them. You know I have to pay for the emails that I send you and if you don’t want to open them save yourself time and me money by opting out. Just unsubscribe and if you ever want to revisit, you can always sign up again. Its that easy!
  • Your Computer/Phone/Tablet Delete, Delete, Delete!  I have a bad habit of letting my phone storage fill up with pictures of my grocery list from my dry erase board or screenshots from things I want to try to remember or something funny to text to a friend. All of the sudden one of my kids does something adorable and there is NO ROOM for another pic! Cut to me frantically deleting texts or dumb pictures that I don’t need. Delete all those texts, pics, downloads and apps that you do not need! Free that space sister! Then your device can run smoothly without being bogged down with the unnecessary crap that is lying around for no reason.  Turn off Notifications! Go into Settings and turn off all notifications from your cell. I only have texts and calls set to notify. Everything else is silent so Im not distracted by the constant ding or    lit screen.
  • Stop TeleMarketing Calls Use 1-888-382-1222 to put your home and cell number on the Do Not Call List. You can also register your number online here. Within 30 days you should not be receiving telemarketer calls and if you do, you can submit a complaint thru the site too.
  • Set up Systems This is key to running your business and your home life efficiently. Think of things that you do regularly that you can automate or streamline. When you have a system in place you will not experience the decision fatigue that often comes when sorting thru the mundane day to day tasks. This can be putting your bills on auto pay schedules or using the subscribe and save feature on Amazon Prime so toilet paper and other necessities just show up at your door step without even thinking about it. Some people like a routine for how they will dress or do their makeup so it requires zero energy and thought process as they rush to get to work. One thing that is crucial at our house is planning our weekly meals and preparing them on the weekend ahead. It helps our weeks run so much smoother!

These are 5 things that are helping me clear out some space in my home, office, devices, and brain in order to create some good stuff for you next year. Name that Biz!

Naming your business 

This is one of the top five things I get asked to help people with when they are starting their business. Unfortunately, recommending a name for your business,  is pretty much impossible. Especially if I don’t know you, who you consider your ideal client to be and what your marketing strategy is.

Naming your business is important, and it does require some thought so take your time!

Remember when I told you that your ideal client profile and the types of work you wanted to do were super important things for you to think about and that both would have a big impact over so many decisions in your business? Naming your business is a great example of one of those decisions you will have to make. Think of your ideal client and the services that you will offer.  If your ideal client is engaged and work you want to do is bridal, then name your business something that brides would be attracted to and want to hire.

You can use your name, but think about whether or not that will change during the course of your business. I started working as a makeup artist long before I met my husband and even though I was open to meeting a great guy, getting married and changing my name, it never occurred to me that I would be anything other than Emily Hudspeth.

So I invested a great deal of time and money, branding myself and my business as Emily Hudspeth, hair design and makeup artist. That is where you will find all information about my business. I am listed as Emily Hudspeth, LLC. My website is emilyhudspeth.com and all of my social media is /emilyhudspeth or @emilyhudspeth.

Sure I could change all of those things but I have been know as Emily Hudspeth, a successful working makeup artist in 4 markets across the United States. If I just one day decide that I am going to be Mrs. Emily Greenwald, hair and makeup,  I would have to work really hard to people to recognize my branding under a new name.

Think about the long term goals of your business. Do you see yourself being the lead artist on every job that you book or do you want to have teams of artists that you can contract out to several events in a day. If you have plans of growing your business to be more than just yourself, that may be another reason to avoid using your first and last name. You should also consider whether or not you would want to sell your business to another artist one day. Using your own name makes selling to another artist a little more tricky.

Be original but don’t be so out there that it doesn’t make sense or people don’t get what you do.  A name like Glitter Girls, probably isn’t going to make people think of timeless, bridal beauty, but a name Your Big Day Beauty, may be more in line with that image.

You also don’t want to be so generic either. Certain names may be more in line with the type of client you are attracting but you don’t want to be one of 10,000 makeup groups with that name in the world because when people search you online, you will be lost in a confusing sea of people with the same name. Do a quick search and see how original the name you are thinking of actually is.

If your name is Betsy and you know you want to build a rocking business with awesome teams of artists who can go out do hair/makeup/nails/tanning/skin care/all things beauty for all types of special events, then maybe the perfect name for your business is Betsy’s Beauty Babes, or the Glamour Girls on the Go. You get the idea. Names like this paint a clear picture of a team of beauty experts that come to you!

You want a name that is unique but not crazy weird and clearly defines what you do. In today’s world, being known online is super important so you want people to find you.

What will your url be? Is it easy to spell? Will people be able to search for you easily in Google and find you. Make sure it sounds good when you say it outloud. Think of successful businesses like Whole Foods, it is pretty easy to understand what they are all about, even if you have never been in their store before. Brand names like Coca-Cola roll right off the tongue.

Here’s a little truth bomb for you. Spelling is important! Using slang or creative spelling of words will just make you harder to find. Naming your business something like “Painting Phaces” or “Glitta Gurl”  isn’t going to make you look unique or creative. It is not going to make set you apart in a positive way. It just makes people think you are unprofessional and can’t spell.

As far as what you should do to legally register that name as a business, you will need to check your local regulations and state laws to determine what steps you need to take to legally set up a business under that name. If you are in the United States, check with your Secretary of State’s office. Check in with a legal and tax professional for information on how to set up your business in the area that you plan to work.
