Grow Your Business in the Slow Season

It doesn’t matter if you are working as a full time makeup artist or if you are doing a little freelance on the side, OR if you are primarily in bridal or strictly commercial work, this time of year can be a little quiet. And for creatives, sometimes we get stir crazy!

So what do you with the down time? My suggestion is that you use this time to GROW your business and take it to the next level!

Here are a few things that I am working on now to grow my business.

Work on New Portfolio Images

This time of year is booming with workshops and styled shoots. This is an excellent time to   get together a team and add some fresh work to your portfolio. These are the best types of images because you can control the content. Unlike with paid clients, you can choose the model, the wardrobe, exactly how you want hair/makeup, the photographer and location.

 Make Friends. Influence People.

It’s easy to hibernate in the winter. I get it, you just want to snuggle up and wait for spring time. But it’s so, so, so important to get show your face…like in real life, not on social media only! If you are new to life as a creative entrepreneur, make sure to get out and connect face to face with other creates.

How? Check out the Rising Tide Society and find a group that meets nearby. I think there are 4-5 groups that meet up the first Tuesday of the month in Richmond, VA. If you don’t know about the Rising Tide Society, look it up, join the movement. #creativityovercompetition

Brainstorm New Services

If you have a busy season and a slower season, you should brainstorm ways to keep the money rolling in year around. At last months Rising Tide Society meeting, my dear friend, Joanna Avant (amazing wardrobe consultant) and I snapped the above picture at the meet up. Can you see the see the sheer excitement on our faces?!?!

Its because we were finishing up the details and getting ready to roll out our new package for Valentine’s Day called the Refresh Sesh. Its a virtual makeup and wardrobe edit! Cool, right? Its a mini version of our services that we are offering via Skype/Facetime and only selling 12 spots this week

Educate Yourself

Sometimes I can be a big old nerd. I just love to learn new stuff. I don’t know why, but knowing new stuff is fun to me! Another super cool thing about the Rising Tide Society in addition to the community aspect is their focus on education.

Their blog is a wealth of information on SO many topics that creative entrepreneurs struggle with. For the last few weeks, I have been signing up for their weekly webinars that have had incredibly informative speakers sharing valuable information that we all need. Check it out!

The Makeup Show 10th Anniversary

This year The Makeup Show is celebrating their 10th Anniversary!

book-cover-225x300And I am over the moon, honored and excited to have the opportunity to attend this year! Especially since my story was chosen as the winner for their special project.

It took me a few weeks to believe this was really true! More on my fears and insecurity here in this blog post on the site I use for my personal freelance business.

I swear I didn’t believe it was true when I saw the email saying that I had won! Then they announced it on their blog here and their Instagram page and it started to feel a bit more real. I posted to the MMMUA Instagram feed (are you following there?) but just now got the confidence to share on my Emily Hudspeth blog and Instagram where there are so many more eyes to see it!

Thanks Sarah Kane Photography for this photo!

So I guess it is real! This is really happening! I am traveling to New York in a few weeks with my new baby daughter. I am both terrified and excited for what this adventure will bring!

Over the next few weeks, I will be preparing for the show. I am making my wish/shopping list and deciding which key note speakers can’t be missed and signing up for Focus sessions. In the past, I have been fortunate enough to attend the blogger previews and social media events and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to get a media pass this year. Then I can report back on more behind the scenes adventures!

The Makeup Show Los Angeles 2014

There is so much I want to tell you about my experience at the Los Angeles Makeup Show this past March. I don’t even know where to start! (which is why it took me so long to write this!)…..I posted my recap of top moments on my other blog that you can find here.

One (of the many) thing that really rocked my socks was being able to sit down and chat with some industry greats. I got a chance to talk with James Vincent, Orlando Santiago and Ve Neill. Here is a little snippet of what we talked about.

Let’s start with Orlando, an education focused beauty artist. I really enjoyed talking with Orlando. We share a passion for beauty makeup and on going education.  One of the first questions that I asked Orlando was who is ideal client is. He told me that his ideal client is the every day woman, which was nice to hear. It is a common misconception that an artist with a resume like Orlando would only be interested in  high fashion or celebrity clients. It is nice to hear an artist like Orlando talk about real beauty on real women.

In addition to being a working artist and educator, Orlando recently launched his own academy in Orlando, Florida. When I asked him what project he has worked on that he is most proud of, he said the school for sure. The answer was the same when I asked him to tell me about the biggest risk he had taken in his career. It is no surprise that the academy felt like a big risk but is also his total pride and joy. Thinking big and taking risks, leads to big rewards and that is what keeps a driven artist like Orlando moving onward and upward.

The academy offers both day and evening classes to accommodate people’s needs. Two week intensive programs are also available. Even though I have been a working artist for going on 12 years now, I would LOVE to have the opportunity to experience a 2 week intensive at the Academy! That would be a total dream come true! And don’t worry, I would report back on all the juicy details because you know I love to share!

I asked Orlando to share his biggest advice for an artist at any point in their career. It was no surprise that his answer went right back to his passion….education! This guy has great experience and knowledge of the beauty industry to share. If you have the opportunity to learn from him, soak it up!

One of my favorite questions to ask any person who has excelled in their career, is what would they be doing if they were doing something totally different. This is always a fun question for creative people. Orlando says that he would still be something creative, probably a sculptor or clothing designer. Given an extra minute to think about it, he says “or a UFC fighter!”, which is just an awesome answer!  I could totally see it, Orlando is super fit!

Follow Orlando on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. For more information on the Academy, email them here.

If you get the opportunity to attend The Makeup Show in any city, make sure to sign up for a class with Orlando.

Why Investing in Your Business is Crucial for Success

What is the most important thing that you should do if you want to be a successful, money making makeup artist? Invest time and money in developing both your business and yourself as an artist! I believe that the best way to do that is by furthering your education.

As a education/travel/beauty junkie, I am over the moon excited about my upcoming trip to LA for the Makeup Show in March. Its been 4 years since my last trip to LA and I can’t wait to soak up everything I can. Its going to be a world wind adventure but I have never been more ready.

Last year I dropped into the Makeup Show in New York City and I have been dying to get back ever since! I was actually not planning to go the show the first time. I was headed up to NYC on the train from Richmond when I realized that the Makeup Show was that weekend. I was lucky enough to get to the show for a few hours one day and it was like stepping into a makeup artists dream! There was so much information to take in and products to buy.  Since it was a last minute opportunity, I wasn’t able to plan ahead and be able to experience everything there was to offer.

How did you get started and what brought you to the beauty industry?
I was always fashionable as a child, so that was a gift..and I decided to take my talents to NYC because I had 2 goals in life, 1, to do what i love to do as a job and way to create income, and 2, to maximize the income level as much as possible, and what better way was it to live in a fashion capital, and 1 of the most profitable cities in the world!! NYC!! So I packed up and moved to NYC to become a fashion stylist! I accomplished that, & would curiosly be intrigued by the lives of the people on video or photography set! I’d be like, “hmmm, I wonder how it is to have their job”..whether it was the photographer, model, makeup or hair stylist. I’ve modeled before but honestly I still am curious about hair & photography, however Makeup spoke to me. I admired how, unlike me, they carried small cases to the green room unpacked, packed back up, and were off…lol!! Meanwhile, I had loads of bags, shoes, accessories, etc. to prep for & pack up at the end of session. After fashion styling became a stalemate for me, I got the inkling to explore makeup while listening to an audiobook, “101 Power Thoughts,” that suggested that I be courageous enough to try a new career!! I found a quick makeup course, and, the rest was history…
What do you specialize in? (events, production, in studio work, hair or makeup, both?)
My specialty is enhancing natural beauty from the inside out! Meaning, I inspire self-reflection & self-empowerment while I apply makeup to the face.
me@work-1
What is the coolest client or gig you have ever landed?
My favorite was & is studying under Emmy Award winning Elena George, assisting her with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts’ makeup at the top of the morning! They are both beautiful women! The biggest gig was applying makeup for Samuel L. Jackson’s wife, LaTonya Richardson…she was so humble & amazing!!
What product or tool is your favorite, can’t live without?
The products I can’t live without are my M.A.C. Eyebrow Pencils and M.A.C. Prolongwear Concealers, I love them!!
IMG_0110_copydone
What was the biggest challenge to starting your own freelance business? How do you stay motivated?
The biggest challenge is believing in one’s self! Understanding that your best is your best at that particular time! The second challenge is relying on the business aspect, like accounting, marketing, staff, etc., and not just the creativity of makeup art itself!
I stay motivated because I no longer chase a dream, I allow my passion to lead me;) It drives me and tells me what I need to know at all times!! So, the same goes for you, believe in you, keep taking action everyday, no matter how small, & let your passion live through you! You can do it!
